Nectarines are actually a cultivar of peach. In fact, there is only one gene that separates peaches and nectarines – the one that causes the fuzz! Nectarines have smooth, fuzz-less skin, dense flesh, and tangy-sweet flavour.

Nectarines are one of the summer’s best treats! A ripe nectarine has bright yellow-orange flesh that is covered by a smooth, red-yellow skin.

Exterior: Red blush to full red over a yellow background.

Interior: Bright yellow-orange flesh with red streaks around a single stone.

Experience: Sweet and sour with mild acidity.

storage

  • Store nectarines at room temperature until ripe — this usually takes 2 to 3 days.
  • A ripe fruit will yield a bit when pressed gently.
  • To speed up the ripening process, place nectarines or peaches in a paper bag and store at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.
  • Storing ripe stone fruit in the crisper drawer will prolong its eating life — it should keep for up to a week when refrigerated.
  • Putting nectarines in the fridge too early causes the flavor and texture to change drastically.

  • Nectarines are drupes, or fleshy fruits with a stone. Cherries are also drupes.
  • Nectarines belong to the same species as peaches. They are not a cross of two fruits.
  • Because nectarines don’t have fuzzy skin, they bruise more easily than peaches.
